Girls on Track Spring 2008
YMCA mission: To put Christian principles into practice through programs that build healthy spirit, mind, and body for all.
GIRLS TODAY:
o Are fifteen times more likely than their mothers to begin using drugs by age 15;
o Are inundated by the media and fashion industry that being emaciated is chic;
o Who drink are 5 times more likely to be sexually active than those who don't.
In 2003 Girls on the Run Participants:
o Statistically saw significant improvement in body image and eating attitudes.
o Held a high sense of self-esteem and self-empowerment.
o Improved their eating habits and attitudes towards food.
(Results appeared beneficial across racial/ethnic categories, which are usually uncommon.)
Life is a journey. Train for it.
The Girls on the Run program is an experiential learning program for 6th through 8th grade girls. The innovative curriculum, designed exclusively for preteen girls, includes running workouts and games that teach specific life skills such as how to make healthy decisions, resolve conflict, and get along in a group. Girls on the Run will prepare girls for a 1 or 3.1 mile running event while improving participants' self-esteem and promoting physical, emotional, mental, and social development.
A FEW FACTS ABOUT GIRLS ON THE RUN
o The program started in 1996 with 14 brave girls at Charlotte Country Day School, in Charlotte, North Carolina.
o The program exists in states all across the U.S. and Canada, and has a 300% yearly growth rate.
o The program has been featured in many publications including Runner's World, Running Times, Cooking Light, American Girl Magazine, People Magazine, Redbook, and Parent Magazine.
o Girls on the Run is also the main subject for founder's, Molly Barker, book Girls on Track.
A Life in Training...
Girls on the Run is an experiential learning program designed for 6th through 8th grade girls that combines training for a 3.1 mile run with life changing, self-esteem enhancing, uplifting warm-ups and workouts that encourage emotional, social, mental, spiritual, and physical development.

Girls on the Run of the Triad, NC is offered in collaboration with the YMCA of High Point.
HOW TO REGISTER
Girls on the Run will meet at the YMCA on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:30 to 4:45 p.m., beginning Tuesday, March 4-May 15. The season will end with an area 5K.
